Student Apprenticeship Showcase

Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Student Apprenticeship Showcase at the Salem Civic Center. The apprenticeship program essentially gives students credentials through employment training and instruction. There were around 20 companies represented ranging from hotels, logistic companies, dentistry, and manufacturing companies, as well as franchised and regional businesses, and more. Showcase provided an opportunity for students to talk with company representatives and learn about the workforce needs in our area.

This work-based learning model gives the students a chance to test the waters with a particular company and field before making any commitments. This program speaks to the role internships play in helping young people determine a career path. Over 100 high schoolers from our area attended the event which continues to grow each year. Students will go through an interview process and the apprenticeship will begin at the start of the next school year. The Department of Labor is collaborating with schools to garner more company participation.
